Career History

Matt Williams joined the ACL in March 2004 as a Clinical Research Fellow to provide clinical input to the CREDO project. His main research interests are automated argument production and clinical motivated descriptions of uncertainty.

He initially studied Medicine at Birmingham University (1993-1999) where he also did an intercalated degree in Pharmacology.

After graduation, he worked in the West Midlands and then in London, doing SHO jobs in Lewisham, the Hammersmith and Charing Cross. After gaining his MRCP, he went to Liverpool to do the DTM&H. He then spent a year at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in The Gambia, where he was A&E Consultant and acting Head of Dept., and helped found the country's first oncology service.

He has recently been appointed as a Specialist Registrar in Clinical Oncology, but has temporarily left the programme to take up the position in the lab.

He is also a tutor for the Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons' Diploma in Medical Informatics and is (slowly) studying for a BA in Maths with the Open University.

Research interests

Before coming to the lab, Matt's interests were in theoretical linguistic and mathematical approaches to medicine and diagnostic test performance. His clinical interests are in oncology and palliative care, especially in relation to the developing world, and he is a founder and trustee of the charity, Health Gambia.
